By doubting, we come to the question. By seeking, we come to the truth.
Step 12 says, “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” The first thing to do when we approach Step 12 is to recognize the first portion of the step’s language, “having had a spiritual awaking as the result of these steps.” By the time we reach Step 12, we’ve likely had a spiritual awakening of some sort. If you think you haven’t, take a quick inventory. As yourself:
- Have I stopped my addictive behavior?
- Am I interacting in healthier ways with family members, bosses, coworkers, neighbors, others?
- Do I feel better about myself and my place in the world?
- Am I more accepting of others?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then you have indeed had a spiritual awakening.
Task for Today
Assess the depth and meaning of your spiritual awakening.
